An integral part of the Christian life is service to others. Furthermore, Paul's teaching that Christians are all different members of one body illustrates the importance of using our spiritual gifts to serve and build up the church. As a mid-sized church with only one pastor and no building of our own, our members have ample opportunity to serve in many different capacities.
Ways to Volunteer
The needs listed below include general needs as well as ones related to specific ministries.
Although the deacons are responsible for ensuring that the material needs of church members are met, that does not absolve members of their duty to care for one another. In fact, the deacons often enlist members to help care for members in need. Many of our congregants have been blessed with special talents (financial management, medical expertise, trade professions, etc.) that they joyfully share with others. The deacons therefore rely not just on their own resources but the collective care of the congregation as they coordinate care for those who are sick or otherwise in need. When these needs arise, the deacons will reach out -- sometimes publicly, sometimes discreetly -- to coordinate care. If you have such a gift or hear of a need that you might be able to help meet, please contact the deacons.
Mercy Fund
In some cases, the primary or immediate need is financial relief. To support expedient assistance, the deacons maintain a mercy fund that is dedicated exclusively to meeting the financial needs of members. On the first Sunday of each month, we conduct a special mercy offering after communion that goes directly to this fund. This fund is managed by a specific diaconal committee. If you have specific questions about the management of the fund or wish to request assistance, contact your deacon. Mercy fund requests are confidential, though certain needs with spiritual components may be communicated to your elder as well.
